Revision of Competition Model Legislation (CARICOM)

CARICOM requested technical assistance in analyzing potential challenges resulting from the introduction of competition policy in its relatively small economy.

Having received this request, our goal was to ensure that competition policy would serve as an instrument to guarantee that Caricom’s economy would accrue from trade liberalization. Our firm analyzed CARICOM’s model competition law on the development of competition policy enforcement.

Econlex provided assessment and advisory on the role of competition policy and the importance of the institutional setting in the successful implementation of the policy. In order to do a thorough evaluation and provide meaningful recommendations on CARICOM’s model competition law we closely examined the implications of the institutional approach to competition policy; we drew the implication of these elements for the definition of a policy agenda suited to Caricom’s particular reality and we identified institutional preconditions for the successful implementation of competition policy.
